African adventure of a lifetime awaits
Published on 31/01/19
Cromer Academy students have the opportunity for the trip of a lifetime to help change the lives of children on an African island.
Volunteer travel organisation African Adventures will take a group for an eight-day trip to support schoolchildren on Zanzibar, off the east coast of Tanzania, in October 2020.
Known as the ‘Spice Island’ for its connection with the spice trade, Zanzibar is famous for its white sandy beaches and historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
However, much of the population live in poverty and its schools are under-resourced and hugely overcrowded, with two teachers giving lessons to as many as 175 children at once.
African Adventures works with two schools on the island which educate a total of 10,000 children between them.
Volunteers will help with activities such as supporting teachers with lessons, reading stories, playing games and sports, and helping to improve the school facilities.
There will also be time to visit the market and beach, and enjoy an ocean safari.
The trip is open to Cromer Academy students currently in Years 7, 8, and 9, as well as Year 6 students who will be joining the school in September 2019.
